A silver color metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86cm) in height overall consisting of a shield blazoned: Argent, an American eagle displayed, holding in the dexter talon an olive branch, in the sinister a bundle of thirteen arrows, on its breast the escutcheon of the United States all Proper; on a chief Azure three five-pointed stars of the first (Argent.)
The distinctive unit insignia was originally approved on 7 May 1928. The original design was cancelled and a new insignia design approved on 12 Sep 1928. On 14 Jul 1950 it was reassigned for The Army War College, Fort Leavenworth, KS. The insignia was rescinded on 4 May 1951 and the original distinctive unit insignia was reinstated. On 6 Jun 1951 the insignia was reassigned for The Army War College, Carlisle Barracks, PA.
