Airman's Medal


Description
Obverse

On a disc, 1 1/2 inches (3.81 cm) in diameter, the figure of the Greek God Hermes, resting on one knee and releasing from open hands an eagle rising into flight, all beneath the arced inscription AIRMANS MEDAL, the two words separated by Hermes head in winged cap, all gold colored metal.

Reverse

The reverse is edged with a laurel wreath with the inscription FOR VALOR. 


Ribbon

The ribbon is 1 3/8 inches (3.49 cm) wide and consists of the following stripes: 9/32 inch Brittany Blue 67119; 1/16 inch Air Force (AF) Yellow 67103; 1/16 inch Ultramarine Blue 67118; 1/16 inch AF Yellow; 1/16 inch Ultramarine Blue; 1/16 inch AF Yellow; 1/16 inch Ultramarine Blue; 1/16 inch AF Yellow; 1/16 inch Ultramarine Blue; 1/16 inch AF Yellow; 1/16 inch Ultramarine Blue; 1/16 inch AF Yellow; 1/16 inch Ultramarine Blue; 1/16 inch AF Yellow; 9/32 inch Brittany Blue


Symbolism

Hermes, son of Zeus and representative of youthful vigor and boldness, is depicted releasing an American Bald Eagle symbolic of the aspirations and ideals of the American Airman.
