Shoulder Sleeve Insignia

Description

On a black rectangular shaped embroidered device, arched at top and bottom, edged with a 1/8 inch (.32 cm) black border, a stylized hawk s head facing right between the inscription "IOWA" at the top, the letters terminating at base on an arch, and "HAWKEYES" in base, all yellow. The overall dimensions are 3 1/2 inches (8.89 cm) in height and 2 1/2 inches (6.35 cm) in width.


Symbolism

Black and yellow are the university colors. The Hawk is the university's mascot, which represents vigilance and honor.


Background

The shoulder sleeve insignia was originally authorized 17 May 1972, it was cancelled due to a new design authorized on 17 June 2008. It is currently being amended to update the manufacturing drawings on 19 May 2017. (TIOH Drawing Number A-10S-191)

Description

On a Gold shield a chevron embattled, between in chief three headgear, one each for the civil War, Spanish-American War and World War I chevronwise and in base two helmets one each for World War ll and The Korea fesswise, all Sable. Crest: From a wreath Or, and Sable a hawk rising of the first, eyed of the second, in front of an arched scroll of the first, bearing the letters "U" to dexter and "I" to sinister of the second. Attached below the shield, a tri parted scroll inscribed "LOYALTY, HONOR, SERVICE" in Black letters.

Background

The shoulder loop insignia was originally authorized on 5 October 1950. It was cancelled due to a new design on 3 July 1962, which was amended to change the initials of the University from "SUI" to "UI" on 28 June 1977, it is currently being amended to update the manufacturing drawings on 19 May 2017.
