Shoulder Sleeve Insignia

Description

On a Silver Gray vertical rectangular shape embroidered item arched convexly at top and bottom edged with a 1/8 inch (.32 cm) Crimson border, a Crimson stylized elephant facing to the front, with white eyes and tusk, outlined and detailed in garnet (dark red). Attached above the rectangle, a silver gray scroll edged with a 1/8 inch (.32 cm) crimson border inscribed "ALABAMA" in white letters. Attached below the rectangle, a silver gray scroll inscribed "ROLL TIDE" in white letters. The overall dimensions are 3 1/2 inches (8.89 cm) in height by 2 1/2 inches (6.35 cm) width.


Symbolism

Crimson and white are the colors of the university. The school's mascot, the elephant, has been a formidable symbol of the school dating back to 1930. The motto, "Roll Tide" refers to the chant delivered when the varsity team run onto the field.


Background

The shoulder sleeve insignia was originally authorized on 27 August 1969. SSI was amended to include the subdued colors of the design on 25 July 1986. It is currently cancelled this date 4 April 2017, to authorize the wear of the new design by the SROTC cadets assigned to University of Alabama. (TIOH Drawing Number A-10S-282)

Description

A gold metal and epoxied shield shaped device 1 1/16 inches (2.70 cm) in height overall blazoned as follows: Per pale Sanguine (crimson) and Argent, the seal of the University of Alabama Or.


Symbolism

Red (crimson) and white are the school colors. The seal, adopted in 1822, "represents the light of science beaming on this hemisphere so lately emerged from a heathenish wilderness."


Background

The shoulder loop Insignia was originally authorized on 13 February 1984, it is currently being amended to updated manufacturing drawings on 4 April 2017.
