Shoulder Sleeve Insignia

Description

On a purple embroidered disc 3 inches (7.62 cm) in diameter edged with a 1/8 inch (.32 cm) gold border overall a gold panther's head in profile, facing to the right, detailed gold brown, between two arced inscriptions "UNIVERSITY OF" at top and below "NORTHERN IOWA," in gold.


Symbolism

Purple and gold are the University's colors. The panther is the mascot of the university.


Background

The shoulder sleeve insignia was originally authorized 31 January 1983, it is currently being amended to update the manufacturing drawings and the ACU color conversion on 9 March 2017. (TIOH Drawing Number A-10J-281)

Description

A gold colored metal and epoxied shield device, 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in height overall blazoned as follows: Purpure, a sword palewise, point upwards, above a laurel wreath Or. Attached below the shield, a purple scroll inscribed "LUX" in gold.


Symbolism

Purple and gold are the colors of the University. The sword and wreath are adapted from the university's seal. The sword symbolizes strength and the wreath represents achievement and merit.

The shoulder loop Insignia was originally authorized 18 October 1984, it is currently being amended to update the manufacturing drawings on 9 March 2017.
