The background pattern of the shield recalls traditional Native American artwork, as well as alluding to the school's mascot of the Native American Chieftain. The alternating colors of the pattern, black and white (silver) are emblematic of the unification of the school's two segregated schools in 1971. The patterns interlock to show solidarity and a bond of strength and equality. The four diamonds are expressive of the four tenants of the Warrior Ethos. Black, white, and red are the school colors.
