Shield. A Silver color metal and enamel device 1 3/16 inches (3.02 cm) in height overall consisting of a shield blazoned as follows:  Per chevron debased Azure (Light Blue) and Gules, in chief a port between two towers Argent masoned of the like (Silver Gray) charged with a key ward to chief turned downward and a wrench saltirewise Sable, overall a grenade of the like flamant of the second garnished Or; in base a demi-sunburst of the last surmounting a demi-wheel issuant from base Argent (Silver Gray).  Attached around the sides and bottom of the shield is a Black tripartite scroll doubled and inscribed with “WARRIORS” “SUPPORT” “WARRIORS” in Silver letters.

Scarlet is one of the colors traditionally used by Support units and the color also denotes valor and sacrifice. The chevron configuration is a symbol for support and emphasizes the support mission to the warfighter.  The castle, symbol of defense and strength, signifies the unit’s ties with the Engineer Branch. The following branches are also associated with the Battalion:  Quartermaster Corps represented with the blue color and key; Maintenance with the wrench; Ordnance with the flaming bomb; and Transportation with the wheel. The golden sunburst is adapted from the 41st Division and recalls the Battalion’s heritage

The distinctive unit insignia was originally approved for the 231st Support Battalion on 1 September 2008.  The distinctive unit insignia was redesignated for the 142d Engineer Battalion on 1 December 2020.
