Shield. The partition of the shield illustrates the seaside community of Point Loma, California which is in the peninsula of the San Diego bay while the double fimbriations emulate waves along the coastline. The gold portion of the shield highlights California as the “Golden State” and the versatility of the T-EPF class of ships. USNS POINT LOMA is the second ship to bear the name and is commemorated by the two silver anchors within the blue field. The flukes of the anchors resemble spearheads, alluding to the class of vessel. Two red crosses showcase the USNS POINT LOMA (T-EPF 15) as the second ship to be modified to support medical missions.
Crest. The Old Point Loma Lighthouse, which was built in the mid-nineteenth century, stands as a landmark for the local community. Furthermore, the lighthouse marks the beginning of U.S. Navy history on the west coast. Serving as a beacon of hope and a guiding light, the USNS POINT LOMA continues that legacy by providing aid and support at home and away. Additionally, the sunset behind the lighthouse pays homage to the Sunset Cliffs National Park further north along the peninsula.
In heraldry, the wreath (or torse) is a critical element of a coat of arms, it was the twisted band composed of two strips of gold or silver lace and silk by which the crest is joined to the knight’s helmet. The torse is always composed of six twists of material displayed alternately. The first twist is the primary metal color (gold or silver) and the second twist represents the primary color of arms in the shield.
Supporters. The Navy officer’s sword and the Navy enlisted cutlass denote the teamwork and cooperation demonstrated by the command and crew of the USNS POINT LOMA (T-EPF 15).
Motto. The ship’s motto, “LONG TRADITION, NEW CAPABILITIES,” emphasizes the close ties the Navy shares with the community of Point Loma and the ship’s distinct capacities to provide medical support.
Seal. The coat of arms as blazoned in full color on a white oval within a dark blue designation band, edged with a gold roped border and bearing the designation “USNS POINT LOMA” at the top and “T-EPF 15” at the base in gold.
