Shield. The shield is parted into two, representing John G. Witherspoon as the First African American to command both a Cutter and Ashore unit. The nebuly pattern recalls the nickname “Papa Spoon” that he held, while his crew and followers were called “Tea Spoons.” The nebuly further denotes unity and cohesion, illustrated through the interlocking pattern. The top of the shield is charged by three pheons, a type of heraldic arrowhead, symbolizing the three cutters that John Witherspoon has commanded – the Mallow, Valient, and Dependable. Black and gold suggests his outstanding service to the U.S. Coast Guard as a leader and mentor, as well as his service in the U.S. Army. The bottom of the shield depicts the bow of a ship, bearing a golden anchor which refers to the USCG’s core values: honor (integrity), respect, and devotion to duty. John Witherspoon is remembered as an inspiration to fostering a culture of diversity through inclusion and commitment.
Crest. The enhanced star, edged with white and silver, suggests the icy waters of Alaska combined with the ship’s support to provide marine safety and protection. The bear and constellation of Ursa Major further signifies the state of Alaska.
Supporters. The trident is a nautical symbol of power and authority over water. Together, the pair of tridents allude to the commitment of accomplishing the mission as a Sentinel-class cutter.
Seal. The coat of arms as blazoned in full color on a circular white background, enclosed by a dark blue border edged on the outside with a gold chain, inscribed “USCGC JOHN WITHERSPOON” above and below “WPC 1158” in gold.
