A Gold color metal and enamel device 1 1/4 inches (3.18 cm) in height overall consisting of a shield blazoned: Gules, a bomb burst emitting crosswise four lightning flashes all within an annulet Or bearing compass markings of the Sable. Attached below the shield a Gold scroll inscribed "WE SEEK" in Black letters.
The shield is red for Artillery. The bomb burst symbolizes sound ranging, and the lightning flashes represent flash ranging, while the compass card represents coordination for the successful operation of this Battalion.
The distinctive unit insignia was originally approved for the 7th Field Artillery Observation Battalion on 8 August 1941. It was redesignated for the 23d Field Artillery Battalion on 24 January 1955.
