Description

On a disc shaped embroidered item edged with a 1/8 inch (.32cm) Red border, centered upon a stylized compass, in base an open book, surmounted by a telescope with the optical tube tilted diagonally from lower left to upper right, the eyepiece lens downwards, above the telescope a Liberty Cap, all Yellow; all between the arched inscription “BLUE MOUNTAIN” above and “BATTALION” in base in White letters. Overall dimensions is 3.5” (8.89 cm) in diameter.


Symbolism

Red and white are colors of Dickinson College. Blue represents the blue mountains surrounding the region. Gold alludes to honor and achievement, and harks back to the original mermaid colors on Dickinson ROTC’s shoulder sleeve insignia. The telescope symbolizes science, while the book represents knowledge and academic excellence. The Liberty Cap is a symbol of freedom referring to the emancipated slaves of ancient Rome. The stylized compass denotes the pioneering spirit of the college’s origins in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, once an outpost of westward expansion. The emblazoned “BLUE MOUNTAIN BATTALION” encompasses the colleges of the region, with Dickinson College identifying as the host institution.

Blazon

On a gold metal and epoxied shield shaped device 1 1/4 inches (3.18 cm) in width blazoned as follows: Or, issuant from base a stylized mountain Azure, bearing in base an open book surmounted by a telescope, the optical tube bend sinisterwise, the eyepiece lens to base, above the telescope a Liberty Cap, all of the first; all between in chief four polestars chevronwise Argent, 2 and 2. Attached below the shield, a Gold tri-parted scroll inscribed to the left “DICKINSON”, at the center “1783” and to the right “COLLEGE”, in blue letters.
