A silver color metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in height overall, divided vertically in half by blue enamel on the left and yellow enamel on the right; superimposed in the center a silver winged sword, hilt and pommel at the base, blade pointed up with wings ascending from the upper portion of the blade. Attached below and around the shield, a silver scroll inscribed "VIRTUS PER DOCTRINAM" in blue enamel letters.
Blue and gold are the colors associated with the University. The sword is indicative of the military and to leadership. The wings refer to the aviation and its missions. The silver reflects the motto of the University, translated "Strength through Knowledge."
The shoulder loop insignia was authorized 19 April 1983.
