Description
A Silver color metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in height overall consisting of a shield blazoned:  Per fess Azure and ermine in chief a battle-axe Argent.  Attached below and to the sides of the shield a Silver scroll inscribed "PRIMUM FRANGERE" in Black letters.

Symbolism
The colors blue and white are the colors for Infantry.  The per fess partition line and the ermine, taken from the corporate arms of Cologne, symbolize the Rhineland campaign.  The battle-axe represents the Central Europe campaign.  The motto translates to "First To Cleave."

The distinctive unit insignia was approved on 15 December 1954.
