On a blue shield 3 inches 7.62 cm) in height and 2 3/8 inches (6.03 cm) in width, a red disc 1 inch (2.54 cm) in diameter charged with a white Arabic number "11" and edged with a 1/8 inch (.32 cm) in white between two white wings elevated and displayed. Attached above the shield a blue arc tab 2 3/8 inches (6.03 cm) in length and 1/2 inch (1.27 cm) in width overall with the inscription "AIR ASSAULT" in red capital letters 5/16 inch (.79 cm) in height.
The red, white and blue refer to the national colors. The wings represent the airborne mission and the "11" refers to the numerical designation of the Division.
The shoulder sleeve insignia was originally approved for the 11th Airborne Division on 4 January 1943. The airborne tab was rescinded on 29 January 1947. The airborne tab was restored on 23 December 1948. The insignia was amended to change the description on 6 September 1949. It was redesignated for the 11th Air Assault Division with the airborne tab being replaced by the air assault tab on 19 February 1963. (TIOH Dwg. No. A-1-89)
