Symbolism

Shield. The light blue portion of the shield symbolizes Charles L. Calhoun’s childhood home in Ocean City, Maryland where he began his age-old connection with the sea. A representation of the Master Chief Petty Officer of the Coast Guard (MCPOCG) collar insignia is shown in full color at the honor point of the shield, as Calhoun was the first to serve in the capacity as the senior enlisted advisor to the Commandant.  Crimson with white stripes symbolizes the Legion of Merit awarded to Charles Calhoun at his retirement for his service as MCPOCG to the enlisted members of the Coast Guard. At the time Calhoun was only the second enlisted member in Coast Guard history to have been awarded the Legion of Merit for his exemplary and superb performance to his country. Charlie Calhoun retired with over thirty years of combined active service with the Navy and Coast Guard, fourteen of those years served at sea.

Crest.  The waves and ship’s wheel are from the Cutterman’s insignia, symbolizing the service’s maritime heritage and highlighting Calhoun’s fourteen years served at sea. MCPOCG Calhoun was on the committee charged with creating the insignia and his contributions to the design are part of his legacy. The red disc represents love and the reef knot refers to family ties. Master Chief Calhoun placed high value on family support and considered it vitally important to the success of Coast Guard men and women.

Supporters. The palm wreath symbolizes service with the Navy in the South Pacific during World War II and with the Coast Guard in Vietnam.

Motto. The motto, “NEVER GIVE UP” characterizes the dedication Charles Calhoun displayed throughout his military career and is the rally cry of the USCGC CALHOUN (WMSL 759) crew.

Seal.  The coat of arms as blazoned in full color on a circular white background, enclosed by a blue border edged on the outside with a gold chain, inscribed “USCGC CALHOUN” above and below “WMSL 759” both in gold.
