Distinctive Unit Insignia
A gold color metal and enamel device 1 1/4 inches (3.18 cm) in width overall consisting of a scarlet shield, the top edge a corona of seven indentations, charged with a gold antique sword hilt to base pommel and hand-guard dark blue intertwining a scarlet sea serpent embowed; attached below a dark blue bipartite motto scroll doubled scarlet and inscribed "SERVIENS SEMPER" in gold letters.
The dark blue of the motto scroll and sword detail represents the Pacific Ocean and the unit's World War II service in that area. The sea serpent refers again to that theater of the war and to East Asian culture, recalling the Philippine Presidential Unit Citation and Army Presidential Unit Citation awarded for World War II service. It also recalls unit participation in the Korean Conflict and the award of the Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation. The unsheathed sword indicates military preparedness and the unit's readiness to defend the United States and its allies. The stylized corona around the top of the shield represents California and the organization's protection of Los Angeles citizens during the riots and unrest in that city. Scarlet denotes courage and sacrifice. The motto translates to "Service Always."
