Shoulder Sleeve Insignia

Shoulder Sleeve Insignia

Description

On a blue reversed pentagon shaped embroidered item a white in crescent, horns pointing to upper left; all within an embattled red and white border; all within a 1/8 (.32cm) red border. Overall dimension is 2 7/8 inch (7.3cm) in height.

Symbolism

Scarlet and white are the recognized colors of the Engineer Regiment. The indigo blue field enclosed within and the silver crescent, or gorget, have long symbolized liberty and freedom, originating with Colonel William Moultrie and the defense of Fort Moultrie in 1775. The combination recalls the South Carolina state flag and underscores the brigades home in the Palmetto State. Joined together, the tri-color design signifies the service of South Carolina Engineers during World War I and II and their decorated service in defense of freedom during the Global War on Terror. The crenellated pentagonal border, emblematic of the regiment and of engineering expertise, suggests the fortified battlements historically constructed by Engineers.

Description

A silver metal and epoxied shield shaped device 1 1/4 inch (3.18cm) in height blazoned as follows: Gules, a pile Azure, surmounted in base by a saltire Argent (Silver), overall a chevron embattled Argent. Attached to the top of the shield, a silver scroll inscribed OVER THE TOP in Blue letters.

Symbolism

Scarlet and white are the recognized colors of the Engineer Regiment. Indigo Blue is the South Carolina state color. The scarlet field parted in the center by the blue pile is a reference to the trenches American soldiers used during World War I. The brigades motto, Over the Top, refers to the act of soldiers emerging from the trenches during an attack, charging into the open to face the enemy, an act seen as both courageous and treacherous. The white chevron is a characterization of the upward movement from the trench and its crenellated pattern alludes to castle battlements illustrating the critical role of the engineer in both offensive and defensive operations. The saltire at base resembles the brigade X iconography. The starburst between the shield and the scroll is expressive of a palmetto leaf, further reflecting the brigades home state of South Carolina.
