Distinctive Unit Insignia

Description

A silver metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (3.18cm) in height overall consisting of a shield blazoned: Gules, on a tower issuant from base embattled of five, Argent detailed, a pair of dividers opened and headed by a fluer-de-lis Sable.  Attached below the shield a motto scroll inscribed "BUILDING FOR READINESS" in black


Symbolism

Scarlet and white are the colors used for Engineers. The tower is symbolic of the construction of fortifications while the dividers signify accuracy and skill. The five battlements refer to participation in five European campaigns during World War II, and the fluer-de-lis and color black relate to France and Germany.


Background

The distinctive unit insignia was approved on 31 Aug 1977.
