Shoulder Sleeve Insignia


Description/Blazon
On a black lozenge 2 inches (5.08cm) in width and 3 inches (7.62cm) in height with rounded corners, a yellow torch surmounted by a white open book, gilded yellow with a red cover, emitting yellow rays to either side.

Symbolism
Black is the branch color of the Chaplain Corps. Gold is emblematic of excellence and white denotes purity. The torch signifies knowledge and leadership. The open book symbolizes the sacred "word" and the divine knowledge and wisdom of religion. The open book is radiating ten rays suggesting spiritual enlightenment.

Background
The shoulder sleeve insignia was approved on 13 Sep 1991. (TIOH Drawing Number A-1-796)

Description/Blazon
A gold color metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86cm) in height overall, consisting of a shield blazoned: Azure (Oriental blue) issuant in chief a demi-sun radiant to base Or and in chief overall a dove, wings outstretched Argent, beak to base holding a sprig of olive Vert above an open book of the second. Attached below the shield a gold scroll inscribed "THE FEAR OF THE LORD IS THE BEGINNING OF WISDOM."

Symbolism
The sun and rays allude to the provision and presence of God in nature. The dove with olive branch, a traditional symbol of peace, embodies the Center and School's mission in the Army to teach the detriment of war and strive for peace. The pages of the open Bible represent the primacy of God's Word.

Background
The distinctive unit insignia originally approved for the U.S. Army Chaplain Center and School was cancelled on 11 Feb 1993. The new insignia was approved on 11 Feb 1993 for personnel assigned to the U.S. Army Chaplain Center and School.

Shield

On a piscium (a pointed oval) a shield blazoned: Blue issuant in chief a demi-sun radiant to base Or and in chief a dove overall descending Argent, beak to base holding a spring of olive Vert and between it's tail and the sun's rays the numerals "1775" yellow above an open book Proper. Above the shield, on a white ribbon scroll edged yellow and showing a red reverse side inscribed "The Fear of the Lord is the Beginning of Wisdom," in black Old English letters. Around the oval is the legend "The Chaplain School of the United States Army" in black uncial gothic letters.

Motto

Background
The device was originally approved on 26 Dec 1961 for the U.S. Army Chaplain School. It was redesignated for the U.S. Army Chaplain Center and School on 23 Dec 1983. On 11 Feb 1993 the device was revised.

The flag for the Chaplain Center and School is dark blue with yellow fringe. The device of the Center and School is centered on the flag (TIOH drawing 5-1-279).
