Distinctive Unit Insignia


Description/Blazon
A Silver color metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in height consisting of a shield blazoned: Sable, in base an annulet Argent, overall a pile of the like bearing a hawk in stoop of the first between two flashes pilewise Tenn. Attached around the base of the shield a Black tripartite scroll inscribed "SPEED AND ACCURACY" in Silver letters.

Symbolism
Orange and white (silver) are the colors traditionally associated with the Signal Corps. Black refers to the unit's mascot and logo, the "Nighthawk." The electronic flashes symbolize tactical communication and speed. The flashes and annulet simulate an arrow hitting a bullseye underscoring the unit's motto, "Speed and Accuracy." The hawk represents the spirit, pride and strength of the warrior. This bird of prey dives and strikes at incredible speeds. The arched top of the device alludes to a military parachute and recalls the unit's airborne capability.

Background
The distinctive unit insignia was approved on 28 September 1990.

From a wreath Argent and Sable a sun in splendor surmounted by two swords saltirewise and a scimitar palewise points down Proper tied by a cord Gules.

Crest

The three blades represent war service in Southwest Asia, World War II and Vietnam. The scimitar highlights the most recent campaign in Southwest Asia, and the sun alludes to the desert heat of Saudi Arabia as well as to the tropical nature of Vietnam. The red cord suggests the battalion's Commendations and denotes valor and sacrifice while underscoring unity and cooperation.

Background
The coat of arms was originally approved on 28 September 1990. It was amended to include a crest on 18 February 1997. The coat of arms was amended to correct the blazon of the crest on 15 November 2001.
