Shoulder Sleeve Insignia

Description
A vertical rectangular shield-shaped embroidered item edged with a 1/8 inch (.32 cm) black border, the top arched inwardly on each side, coming to a point at the center 3 1/2 inches (8.89 cm) in height and 2 1/2 inches (6.35 cm) in width overall blazoned as follows: Argent,  a representation of the San Jacinto Monument Scarlet, a mullet radiated, eight (8) rays downward, four (4) and four (4), Azure.

Symbolism
The monument represents the San Jacinto monument, a Houston landmark.  The star and rays allude to the academic excellence.
     

Background
The shoulder sleeve insignia was originally authorized 26 February 1975.   It was amended to add a symbolism on 14 November 1991, currently amended to update the manufacturing drawings, and correct an error in the description on 17 July 2014. (TIOH Drawing Number A-10J-233)

Description
A silver color metal and enamel device 1 3/16 inches (3.02 cm) in height overall consisting of a shield blazoned:  Azure, above a representation of the San Jacinto monument, a mullet radiated six (6) rays downward, three (3) and three (3), Argent (Silver).  Attached below the shield, a Blue tripartite scroll inscribed HONOR AND COURAGE in Silver letters.

The shoulder loop insignia was originally authorized 25 March 1976.  It was amended to include manufacturing drawings, update the description and add a symbolism on 17 July 2014.
