Shoulder Sleeve Insignia

Description

An oval shaped device 3 1/2 inches (8.89 cm) in height and 2 1/2 inches (6.35 cm) in width overall consisting of an inner yellow oval fimbriated blue, on which is a white torch enflamed outlined and detailed blue surmounted by a blue saltire; around the oval center a white designation band edged with an 1/8 inch (.32 cm) blue border, and inscribed “MIDDLE TENNESSEE” at top and “STATE” in base, in blue letters 5/16 inch (.79 cm) in height.


Symbolism

Blue and white are the University’s colors. The saltire represents the student’s commitment to academic excellence and support to the community.


Background

The shoulder sleeve insignia was originally authorized 28 August 1972. The symbolism was updated on 14 March 2023. (TIOH Drawing Number A-10S-182)

Shoulder Loop Insignia

Description

A gold color metal and enamel device 1 18 inches (2.86 cm) in height overall consisting of a shield blazoned:  Vert, a saltire Azure.  Attached below the shield a Gold scroll inscribed “RAIDERS” in Blue, all superimposed upon a Gold torch. 


Symbolism

The torch symbolizes knowledge. The saltire represents the student’s commitment to excellence and support to the community. Green denotes Armor, the branch of service that was the focus of the SROTC at the university when the insignia was designed (1950).

The shoulder loop insignia was originally authorized 4 December 1950. The symbolism was updated on 14 March 2023.
