Shoulder Sleeve Insignia

Description
A disc 3 inches (7.62 cm) in diameter overall consisting of an inner light blue disc displaying a yellow enflamed yellow torch and a yellow quill diagonally crossed, surmounted in center by a white representation of the Norfolk Mace encircling the inner disc a white designation band edged with an 1/8 inch (.32 cm) light blue border, inscribed OLD DOMINION at top and UNIVERSITY at bottom in light blue letters.

Symbolism
The torch alludes to liberty and the spirit of free inquiry. The quill is a symbol of academic development. The Norfolk Mace denotes the location of the university and represents the citys rich history as a strategic military and transportation point. 

Background
The shoulder sleeve insignia was originally authorized 25 March 1969.  It was amended to include a manufacturing drawing, update the description and add cable numbers on 11 March 1998 currently amended to update the colors on the manufacturing drawing on 8 October 2014.  (TIOH Drawing Number A-10S-148)

Description
A silver color metal and enamel disc 1 1/8 inches 2.86 cm) in diameter consisting of an inner light blue center bearing a  silver cross between fleur-de-lis and lion rampant at the top and a harp and castle  in base all silver.  Centered on the cross a light blue Lamp of Knowledge enflamed.    Encircling the disc a silver designation band inscribed OLD DOMINION at the top and UNIVERSITY at bottom in black letters.

Symbolism
Blue and silver are the colors of the University. The insignia incorporates simplified elements of the seal of the University which was designed to symbolize the origin of Virginia with the college of William and Mary, Old Dominions parent institution.

Background
The shoulder loop insignia was originally authorized 14 November 1969. It was amended to update the manufacturing drawings on 8 October 2014.
