Shoulder Sleeve Insignia

Description
A white circular embroidered device, within an 1/16 inch (.16cm) green border, displaying two stylized Spartan heads side by side and in profile facing left, detailed green, wearing green helmets, with yellow plumes, encircled by a yellow designation band, inscribed NORFOLK STATE UNIVERSITY at the top and SPARTANS at the bottom, all within a 1/8 inch (.32 cm) green border. Overall dimension is 3 inches (7.62 cm) in diameter.

Symbolism
Green and gold are the colors of Norfolk State University.  The Spartan is the university mascot.

Background
The shoulder sleeve insignia was originally authorized 8 July 1980.  It was amended to change the name of the school from College to University on 5 July 1985. A new SSI was authorized on 27 June 2008 currently amended to update the manufacturing drawing dated 12 September 2014. (TIOH Drawing Number A-10S-6)

Description
A gold colored metal and enamel shield shaped device, 1 1/8 (3.02 cm) in height overall blazoned as follows: Vert, an unfurled scroll in bend, surmounted by a quill pen bendsinisterwise, all Or, on a chief of the first edged of the last, a closed book Or. Attached below, a gold scroll, inscribed NORFOLK in green.

Symbolism
Green and gold are the colors of the university. The book, scroll and quill are taken from the device/seal of the school.

The shoulder loop insignia was originally authorized on 8 July 1980.  It was amended to update the manufacturing drawings on 12 September 2014.
