Shoulder Sleeve Insignia

Description
On a red vertical rectangle arched convexly at top and bottom and edged with a 1/8 inch (.32 cm) black border a snow-capped black mountain range surmounted by two red swords in saltire, points down. Attached above the rectangle a red scroll edged with a 1/8 inch (.32cm) black border inscribed MOUNTAIN in black. Attached below the rectangle, a red scroll edged with a 1/8 inch (.32 cm) black border inscribed RANGERS in black. The overall dimensions are 3 1/2 inches (8.89 cm) in height and 2 3/8 inches (6.03 cm) in width.

Symbolism
The insignia reflects the colors associated with the school. The snow-capped mountains allude to the schools location in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The swords denote the SROTC program and the honor of being a member of the Mountain Rangers.

Background
The shoulder sleeve insignia was originally authorized 12 November 1982.  It was cancelled due to a new design and authorization of an updated description and symbolism on 26 November 2014.  (TIOH Drawing Number A-10S-233)

Description
A gold color metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86cm) in height overall consisting of a shield blazoned: Celeste, an open book Argent below a representation of the Garden of Gods Or, a base wavy alternating Gules and of the third, overall a sword erect blade of the second hand guard of the third. Attached below the shield a segmented gold scroll inscribed UCCS in black.

Symbolism
Blue and gold are the colors of the University of Colorado. The wavy base, alluding to water, refers to Colorado Springs. The color red represents the Spanish word for Colorado. Together with the Garden of the Gods, they are indicative of the location of the university. The open book alludes to knowledge and the sword to the military and leadership.

The shoulder loop insignia was authorized 12 November 1982.
