Shoulder Sleeve Insignia

Description
A yellow silhouette in the shape of the State of Indiana edged with a 1/8 inch (.32 cm) black border, bearing a black diagonal band from upper left to lower right, inscribed PURDUE in yellow letters and a black star at the location of the University within the state.  Overall dimensions are 4 inches (10.16 cm) in height and 2 11/16 inches (6.83 cm) in width.

Symbolism
Gold and black are the colors of the University.  The shape of the insignia symbolizes the State of the Indiana.  The black star signifies the location of the University.

Background
The shoulder sleeve insignia was originally authorized 6 May 1952.  It was amended to add metric measurements and subdued colors on 25 September 1992 and currently amended to update the manufacturing drawing 23 December 2014.  (TIOH Drawing Number A-10S-98)

Description
A gold color metal and enamel 15/16 inch (2.38 cm) in height overall consisting of a black enamel shield on which is a griffin grasping a Lamp of Knowledge all gold, all within a red enamel border.

Symbolism
Gold and black are the colors of the University.  The griffin and Lamp of Knowledge are taken from the Universitys seal.  The scarlet border alludes to Artillery.

Background
The shoulder loop insignia was originally authorized 18 December 1933.  It was amended to portray the griffin correctly and to the update the description and symbolism on 19 October 1979 and currently amended to update the manufacturing drawings on 23 December 2014.
