Shoulder Sleeve Insignia

Description
On a red disc with a white 1/8 inch (.32 cm) border edged red, 3 inches (7.62 cm) in diameter overall, a white tower detailed red rising from a red mound detailed white in base. Diagonally across the center of the disc from dexter to sinister, the capital letters U P R, the first and last white upon the red background and the middle letter red upon the white tower.

Symbolism
Red symbolizes valor and white is for excellence. The tower is a landmark structure on the campus and is built in the Spanish Renaissance style, representing the rich history of Puerto Rico. 

Background
The shoulder sleeve insignia was originally authorized 24 January 1957, and currently amended to update the manufacturing drawings on 2 February 2015.  (TIOH Drawing Number A-10S-239)

Description
A silver colored metal and enamel shield shaped device, 1 3/16 (3.02 cm) in height overall blazoned as follows: Azure, issuant from a base Celeste a representation of a building Argent (Silver) surmounting a sun in splendor Or (Yellow), between two palm trees of the third (Silver). Arched at the top of the shield is a red scroll inscribed UNIVERSIDAD in silver letters, looped behind the shield on each side to an arched red scroll below the shield inscribed DE PUERTO RICO in silver letters.

Symbolism
Blue and light blue allude to the sky and sea surrounding Puerto Rico. The sun in splendor refers to the climate and accomplishment. It also recognizes the University as a source of knowledge and leadership, providing academic, cultural, physical, and military training and development. The building and palm trees are from the seal of the University.
