Shoulder Sleeve Insignia

Description
a diagonally crossed rifle, muzzle up, to the right and a sable, point up to the left, surmounted in the center by a torch inflamed, on each side of the torch, four star, two stars at top and two in base, all yellow; all encircled by a yellow designation band edged with a 1/8 inch (.32 cm) green border, the inscription NORTHERN at top and MICHIGAN UNIVERSITY at bottom.  The overall diameter is 3 inches (7.62 cm).

Symbolism

Yellow (Old gold) and green are the colors of the University.  The rifle and sabre allude to military training and leadership.  The torch enflamed represents enlightenment and high standards of academic achievement.  The four stars, from the seal of the University refer to the Universitys four-dimensional program of instruction, research, service and advance study.

The shoulder sleeve insignia was originally authorized 30 July 1969, and currently amended to update the manufacturing drawings on 25 February 2015.  (TIOH Drawing Number A-10S-236)

Description
A gold colored metal and enamel disc consisting of a green vertical placed rectangle arched inwardly on the left and right, arched outwardly at top and bottom, surmounted at top by a gold triangle, point downward, bearing four green stars, two, one and one; all within a circular gold designation band inscribed NORTHERN MICHIAGN at top and UNIVERSITY at bottom all in green letters.

Symbolism
Yellow (gold) and green are the colors of the University.  The rectangle with the pile, simulates the letter M for Michigan.  The four stars represent the Universitys four dimensional program of instruction, research, service and advanced study.
