Shoulder Sleeve Insignia

Description
On an orange disc 2 1/2 inches (6.35 cm) in diameter, displaying a black Dragoon Shako with a yellow badge and cord and a white pompon; superimposed in lower center the inscription VOLS in white; all within a 1/8 inch (.32 cm) orange border.

Symbolism
The Dragoon Shako symbolizes the States participation in the Mexican War, the time of origin of the nickname VOLUNTEER STATE. VOLUNTEERS is also the nickname of the University of Tennessee.  Orange and white are the school colors.

Background
The shoulder sleeve insignia was originally authorized 12 June 1961.  It was amended to update the manufacturing drawings on 10 November 2015.  (TIOH Drawing Number A-10S-247)

Description

A gold metal color device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in height consisting of a shield shape blazoned as follows, Gules, on a fesse Argent between in chief a stylized plow, sheaf of wheat and transit compass and in base a boat upon the sea all Or, a demi-sphere of the second grid lined of the third in dexter and in sinister a demi-gear wheel of the third overall a bezant bearing an open book emitting 48 rays all of the third. Attached to each side and the base of the shield a white tri-partite scroll inscribed UNIVERSITY OF TENNESSEE in Gold letters.


Background
The shoulder loop insignia was originally authorized 13 February 1975.  It was amended to update the manufacturing drawings on 10 November 2015.
