Symbolism

Orange and green are the colors of Wingate High School. The bear, in Navajo lore, is the sacred guardian of the mountain forests; a creature to be feared, revered, and protected from the ravages of man.  The five enamel bars from the colors used in Navajo sand paintings are also representative of Navajo lore: white indicative of east and early dawn, the false dawn which comes before daylight; blue representative of south and the color of the evening sky, the blue twilight, the color of happiness; yellow alludes to the west and is also the color of yellow twilight; black refers to north and also to night; red is the color of sunshine.  These five colors are the five sacred colors of the Navajo.  The word SHUSH is the Navajo word for bear.
