Shoulder Sleeve Insignia

Description

On an olive drab circular embroidered item, a shield blazoned as follows: Or, a boars head erased Azure. CREST: From a wreath Or and Azure, two muskets in saltire of the last, muzzles upward, superimposed by a stylized rose Or, stalked and leaved Vert; all within a circular yellow scroll at top with the inscription UNIVERSITY OF NORTH GEORGIA and below on a yellow circular scroll, the inscription DAHLONEGA, all blue; all within a 1/8 inch (.32 cm) olive drab border. Overall diameter is 3 inches (7.62 cm).


Symbolism

Blue and white are the universitys colors. The boars head alludes to the historic official designation of the ROTC unit at North Georgia, the Boar's Head Brigade, which was formed along standard military units at a smaller scale. The crossed blue muskets denotes The Blue Ridge Rifles, established in 1950, as a military unit within the ROTC program at the University of North Georgia. The rose symbolizes the Cherokee rose, the state flower of Georgia.


Background

The shoulder sleeve insignia was originally authorized on 11 August 1937. It was cancelled and a new design was authorized on 17 March 1950, a circular embroidered olive drab disc was placed around the original image, it is currently amended to update the manufacturing drawings, description and symbolism due to a retroactive school name change from North Georgia College to University of North Georgia on 10 November 2015. Description

A Gold colored metal and epoxied shield shaped device, 1 1/2 (3.81 cm) in height overall blazoned as follows: Or, a boars head erased Azure, tusk Argent, langued Gules. CREST: From a wreath Or and Azure, two muskets in saltire of the first, muzzles upward, superimposed by a stylized rose Argent, stalked and leaved Vert. Attached below the shield, a Gold tri-partite scroll, doubled Blue inscribed in TRUTH AND WISDOM, in Blue. 


Symbolism
