Shoulder sleeve insignia

Description

On a shield shaped embroidered item edged and enhanced at the top with a 1/8 inch (0.32cm) Yellow border, blazoned as follows: Sable, between the wings of an eagle ascending affrontée Proper, wings elevated, a mullet Argent. Attached above the item a Black scroll edged with a 1/8 inch (0.32cm) Yellow border, inscribed “EAGLE BATTALION” in Yellow letters. Overall dimensions are 3-1/2 inches (8.89cm) in height by 2 9/10 inches (7.46cm) in width.


Symbolism

Black and gold are the colors associated with the Army ROTC. Gold represents abundance and academic excellence within the University of Wisconsin’s system. Black highlights the cadets’ constancy and resilience.  The eagle is the mascot of the host school in the La Crosse campus as well as being representative of our National symbol. It further points to the name of the program, the Eagle Battalion which prepares future soldiers for battle. The white star against the black background serves as a guide for cadets to navigate through adversity and future challenges.


Background

The Shoulder sleeve insginia was originally approved on 2 December 1971. It was cancelled and a revised design was approved on 10 August 1990.   A new SSI design was approved on 11 April 2022.  (TIOH Drawing Number A-10S-0065).

Description

On a gold metal and epoxied shield shaped device 1-1/4 inches (3.18 cm) in height blazoned as follows: Pily of seven Sable and Argent, issuant from base to sinister a demi-eagle closed reguardent Or. Attached below the shield, a  gold scroll inscribed “BIRDS OF PREY” in black letters.


Symbolism

Black and gold are the colors of the Army ROTC. White signifies cadets’ dedication to the program. The white wedges of the shield background denote illuminating rays, adapted from the seal of the University of Wisconsin system, uniting the nine universities under one insignia. The eagle is the mascot of the host school which embodies courage and a steadfast spirit.
