The tribal name of Santaluces was widely used by Spanish officials beginning in the 17th century, and had great respect for the ferocity of the Native American locals. Chiefs at the time were tattooed in black and red, dressing their heads, wearing painted deer hides, shell belts, painted bird plumes and pendants made of copper.
