Shoulder Sleeve Insignia

Description

On a green rectangular shaped embroidered item arched at top  and bottom and edged with a 1/8 inch (.32 cm) black border, displaying a gold silhouette of a highlander.  Attached below the rectangle, a gold scroll edged with a 1/8 inch (.32 cm) black border inscribed HIGHLANDERS in black letters.  The overall dimensions are 3 1/2 inches (8.89 cm) in height and 2 1/2 inches (6.35 cm) in width.


Background
The shoulder sleeve insignia was originally authorized 5 November 1973, currently amended to update the manufacturing drawings on 11 March 2016.  (TIOH Drawing Number A-10J-1128)

Description

A silver colored metal and enamel device, 1 1/8 (2.86 cm) in height overall blazoned as follows: a shield divided per pale Vert dexter and Or sinister, a border in sinister side of the second and a border in dexter side of the first, a cross Moline between two crowns in chief, counterchanged and two crowns below the cross counterchanged (green on yellow, yellow on green). Attached below the shield, a pierced silver scroll, with the inscription "LEADERSHIP THROUGH LEARNING, all Sable


Symbolism

The colors and symbols used are taken from the personal crest of General Douglas MacArthur, a man of ancient Scottish ancestry. Green stands for growth. Gold is for courage. Black is for determination. The Cross Moline is for truth. The crowns are for General MacArthurs ideals (Duty, Honor, and Country).
