Shoulder Sleeve Insignia

Description

A shield shaped embroidered item edged with a 1/8 inch (.32 cm) blue border, blazoned as follows.  Sable a sun issuant from base Or, on a base of the second, three stacked open books, Azure, Sable and of the third; all with a bordure of the second.  Attached above the shield, a Yellow scroll edged with a 1/8 inch (.32 cm) Blue border notched inwardly at the top corners beveled inwardly inscribed AKRON in Black letters.


Symbolism

Navy blue, and gold are the school colors.  The insignia is reflective of the Ohio State seal.  The sun denotes the schools motto and allude to the cadets enlightenment through knowledge.  The open books symbolize the relationship of learning from faculty to student to community.  The three books represent the University and its history as private, municipal and state institution.


Background

The shoulder sleeve insignia was originally authorized 21 July 1983.  It was cancelled due to a new design and on 14 January 1992. The current patch was amended to change the inscription to AKRON vice UNIVERSITY OF AKRON on 16 February 1994, currently amended to update the manufacturing drawings on 6 May 2016.  (TIOH Drawing Number A-10S-259)

Description

A Gold color metal and epoxied device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in width  overall consisting of a shield blazoned:  Celeste, above a mountain landscape Vert, with three pine trees of various sizes Or, a sun of the last; on a chief Or, the inscription AKRON Azure.  Attached below the shield a Gold Scroll inscribed LET THERE BE LIGHT in Blue letters.


Symbolism

Navy blue and gold are the school colors. The landscape design is taken from the Ohio State seal the home state of the university. 


Background

The shoulder loop insignia was authorized 7 June 1956, currently amended to update the manufacturing drawings on 7 June 2016.
