Shoulder Sleeve Insignia

Description

On a light blue disc edged with a 1/16 inch (.16 cm) purple border, a horizontal purple mountain range snow capped white above four alternating white over light blue wavy bands, all within a white circular designation band edged with a 1/8 inch (.32 cm) purple border and inscribed UNIVERSITY OF PORTLAND arcing above and PILOTS arcing below in purple letters, overall two yellow sabers chevronwise.  The overall dimension is 3 inches (7.62 cm) in diameter. 


Symbolism

Purple and white are the colors of the university.  The mountains are representational of the local terrain.  The bicolor wavy lines allude to the Columbia and Willamette Rivers which converge at the seaport of Portland.  Two swords in readiness for combat exemplify the cadets dedication to serve, honor and defend.


Background

The shoulder sleeve insignia was authorized 27 March 1997, currently amended to update the update the manufacturing drawings on 22 April 2016. (TIOH Drawing Number A-10S-141)

Description

A silver color metal and epoxy device, 1 1/8 inch (2.86 cm) in height overall consisting of a green shield with a wavy chevron and overall a silver cogwheel impaled by a silver torch enflamed red.  Attached below the shield is a silver scroll inscribed PER PERVICACIAM VICTORIA in green letters.


Symbolism

White (silver) and green are representative of the Pacific Northwest and Oregon.  The torch is indicative of knowledge and leadership and the military aspects of the University.  The cogwheel alludes to the schools emphasis on engineering and local manufacturing industries.  The wavy chevron represents the Columbia and Willamette Rivers which converge at the seaport of Portland, Oregon.


Background

The shoulder loop insignia was originally authorized 22 February 1985. It was amended to correct the symbolism on 27 March 1997, currently amended to update the manufacturing drawings on 22 April 2016.
