Shoulder Sleeve Insignia

Description

On a disc 3 inches (7.62 cm) in diameter, edged with a 1/8 inch (.32 cm) black border; a black centered circle bearing a representation of mission architecture in white, shaded black, between two large green trees.  The tree on the right being a palm tree.  All enclosed by a red circular scroll with SAN DIEGO STATE arched at the top and UNIVERISTY arched at the bottom in black letters.


Symbolism

Red and black are the school colors.  The image is representative of the history and traditions of the area and demonstrates the pride the unit shares with school and community.


Background

The shoulder sleeve insignia was originally authorized 9 November 1982, it was amended to add subdued colors on 24 June 1988. A new design was authorized on 27 November 2001, currently amended to update the manufacturing drawings on 12 April 2016. (TIOH Drawing Number A-10S-162)

Description

A silver color metal and epoxy device, 1 1/8 inch (2.86 cm) in height overall consisting of the shield from the device with a three segmented silver scroll attached along the sides and in base inscribed SAN DIEGO on the dexter segment, STATE on the center segment and UNIVERSITY on the sinister segment, all letters red.


Symbolism

Red and black are the colors of the University.  The architectural representation featuring the Bell Tower on the campus is a well-known landmark of the University.  The blue of the sky, indicative of the climate, alludes to the atmosphere at the University being favorable to learning.

The shoulder loop insignia was originally authorized 28 February 1983, currently amended to update the manufacturing drawings on 12 April 2016.
