Shoulder Sleeve Insignia

Description

On a vertical rectangular shaped embroidered item, coming to a 90 degree point at base, arched outwardly at top, edged with a 1/8 inch (.32 cm), green border, issuing from base a green oil derrick, to the right of the derrick, a yellow beveled star. Attached above the rectangle, a white scroll, edged with a 1/8 inch (.32 cm) green border inscribed LONGVIEW in green letters. The overall dimensions 3 5/8 (9.21 cm) inches in height and 2 3/4 (6.99 cm) inches in width at its widest point.


Symbolism

Green and white are the school colors. The oil derrick is centered on the insignia, symbolizing the center of the Great East Texas Oil Field.  The beveled star, adapted from the seal of Texas, positioned at the right of the derrick, denotes the City of Longview as the hub of industry and commerce in East Texas.


Background

The shoulder sleeve insignia was originally authorized 8 March 1972, currently amended to update the manufacturing drawings on 14 July 2016. (TIOH Drawing Number A-10J-1139)
