Shoulder Sleeve Insignia

Description

On a rectangle arched convexly at top and bottom, edged with a 1/8 inch (.32 cm) black border, divided diagonally from upper right to lower left white over red, a double-tailed panther, standing on hind foot, the left foot in the air, holding in its left paw a torch, all counterchanged. Attached below the rectangle, a red scroll edged with a 1/2 (.32 cm) black border inscribed, TAR HEEL in white letters.  The overall dimensions are 3 1/2 inches (8.89 cm) in height by 2 1/4 inches (5.72 cm) in width.


Symbolism

Red and white are the school colors. The panther is the schools mascot. The double tail represents the cadets civic involvement in community and school activities.  The panther holding a torch reflecting the cadets dedication to academics and enlightenment through education. 


Background

The shoulder sleeve insignia was originally approved on 11 May 1994, currently amended to update the manufacturing drawings on 12 July 2016. (TIOH Drawing Number A-10J-326)

Description

A silver colored metal and epoxy device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in height overall consisting of a vertical rectangular shield arched outwardly at the top and bottom, divided diagonally from upper right to lower left, white at top and red below, bearing a stylized black panther head with a red mouth, issuing from two diagonally crossed silver tobacco leaves, between the inscription PANTHER above and PRIDE below in red letters.  


Symbolism

Red and White are the universitys colors. The panthers is the school mascot. The tobacco leaves signify the major economy of the units home area.      


Background

The shoulder loop Insignia was originally authorized on 23 October 1996, currently amended to update the manufacturing drawings on 12 July 2016.
