Shoulder Sleeve Insignia

Description

On a blue embroidered disc edged with a 1/8 inch (.32 cm) white border, 3 inches (7.62 cm) in diameter overall, a white stylized osprey swooping, garnished black, between two arced inscriptions UNIVERSITY OF at the top and NORTH FLORIDA at the bottom in white letters.


Symbolism

Blue and white are the universitys colors. The osprey a member of the hawk family which is abundant in Florida, and is the Universitys mascot.


Background

The shoulder sleeve insignia was originally authorized 23 May 1983, it is currently being amended to update the manufacturing drawings, description and symbolism on 9 March 2017.  (TIOH Drawing Number A-10S-278).

Description

A silver colored metal and epoxied shield shaped device, 1 1/4 inches (3.18 cm) in height overall blazoned as follows: Celeste, a roundel Argent (Silver), bearing a compass rose of the first, detailed of the second. Attached below the shield, a silver color metal scroll inscribed "UNIVERSITY OF NORTH FLORIDA" in light blue letters.


Symbolism

Blue and white (silver) are the universitys colors. The compass rose, long a direction finding device for mariners, symbolizes the Universitys role in providing direction for lives.
