Shoulder Sleeve Insignia

Description

On a shield shaped embroidered item arched convexly at top edged with a 1/8 inch (0.32 cm) silver border blazoned as follows: Sable, a stylized foxs head caboshed Argent (Silver Gray) eyed Gules. Attached above the shield, a black scroll edged with a 1/8 inch (0.32 cm) silver border inscribed FOX VALLEY in silver. The overall dimensions are 3 1/4 inches (8.26 cm) in height by 3 inches (7.62 cm) width.


Symbolism

The highly stylized foxs head is indicative of the name of the joint SROTC program lead by the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh. The fox is a clever and curious creature, suggesting the cadets use their wits and wisdom to overcome challenges and pursue their interests.


Background
The shoulder sleeve insignia (SSI) was originally authorized 29 October 1970. It was amended to change the designation of the school on 28 December 1971, is was cancelled on 25 September 2018 due to a new design, description and symbolism.  (TIOH Drawing Number A-10S-276)

Description
On a shield shaped silver metal and epoxied device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in height blazoned as follows: Sable, a pile enarched Argent, overall a stylized foxs head caboshed Or eyed and nosed of the first. Attached below the shield, a black scroll inscribed FOX VALLEY in silver.

Symbolism

The use of a pile upon the field suggests the shape of a valley. Pairing the fox with the division of the shield alludes to the SROTC programs name of Fox Valley, which is derived from the five participating schools residing in the same geographical area around the Fox River in Wisconsin. The black, white, and gold color scheme honors the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh as the host and lead organization for the joint ROTC program.
