Shoulder Sleeve Insignia

Description

On a white embroidered disc edged with a 1/16 inch (.16 cm) yellow border, a yellow fleur-de-lis within a crescent moon, the horns upward, divided evenly through the center, blue over light blue, all encircled by a white designation band, edged with a 1/8 inch (0.32 cm) yellow border inscribed ORLEANS arcing at the top and arcing at the base BATTALION, in blue letters. Overall dimension is 3 1/4 inches (8.26 cm) in diameter.


Symbolism

The blue crescent recalls the citys nickname as the Crescent City and indicates the course of the Mississippi River as it flows through the city. The fleur-de-lis refers to the French heritage of the city with a vital link to the river. 


Background
The shoulder sleeve insignia was originally authorized 26 September 1989, it is currently being updated to include manufacturing drawings and the ACU color conversion on 30 April 2017. (TIOH Drawing Number A-10S-48)

Description

A gold color metal and epoxied shield shaped device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in height, consisting of a shield blazoned: Argent, two swords in saltire Azure, garnished Or, between three fleurs-de-lis of the third, all above a crescent of the second. Attached below the shield a bi-parted scarlet scroll, inscribed ORLEANS to left and to the right BATTALION, in gold.


Symbolism

The white shield signifies the purity of intent exhibited by the Orleans Battalion in attaining their goals. The crossed swords suggest military training and defense of the principles of the Constitution. The fleur-de-lis allude to the French origins of New Orleans. The blue crescent recalls the citys nickname as the crescent City and indicates the course of the Mississippi river as it flows through the city.
