Shoulder Sleeve Insignia

Description

On a shield shaped embroidered item edged with a 1/8 inch (.32 cm) black border, blazoned as follows: Azure, the capital letter U surmounted by the capital letter X, Argent. Overall dimensions are 3 inches (7.62 cm) in height by 2 5/8 inches (6.67 cm) in width.


Symbolism

White and blue are the university colors. The capital letters X over the U represent the first letters of Xavier University.


Background

The shoulder sleeve insignia was originally authorized 25 July 1950, it is currently being updated to include manufacturing drawings and to add the ACU color conversions on 8 August 2017. (TIOH Drawing Number A-10S-271)

Description

A Gold colored metal and epoxy shield shaped device, blazoned as follows: Per pale, Azure, two pallets Argent, per fess Or and of the second, in sinister chief issuant from sinister a dexter arm embowed, vested Sable grasping a passion cross of the last; in sinister base three escallops, two and one, Gules. Surmounted on top the shield, vertical ellipse Azure, coming to a point at each end and emitting rays Or, inscribed with the letter IHS of the last. Attached below the shield, a tri-parted blue scroll with the Latin inscription, VIDIT to the left MIRABILIA in the middle and MAGNA in Gold.
         



Symbolism

The shield is divided vertically into two equal sections. The left side shows the coat of arms of the Xavier family, consisting of five vertical stripes, two white and three blue. The right side is divided horizontally; the upper half is a gold background displaying a right arm wearing a Jesuit black robe and holding a black crucifix. This signifies St. Francis Xavier; patron of missions, preaching Christ crucified, and with that arm (still incorrupt since 1551) baptizing hundreds of thousands of infidels. In the lower half, on a white background are three red escallop shells, signifying the three journeys Xavier took through the Middle East and among the islands of the Far East.  Above the shield is the Jesuit seal of the Holy Name, IHS; below the shield, a tri-parted scroll with the motto in Latin, VIDIT MIRABILIA MAGNA which translates to He has seen Great Wonders.

The shoulder loop insignia was originally authorize 02 June1955.  It was amended to add chip members on 15 September 1993, it is currently being updated to include manufacturing drawings on 8 August 2017.
