Shoulder Loop Insignia

Description

On a shield shaped silver metal and epoxied device 1 1/4 inches (3.18 cm) in height blazoned as follows: Gules, a base Azure surmounted by two wavys Celeste, overall a stylized bridge Or throughout; in chief, between bridge towers, a sun in splendor of the fourth, rays Argent (Silver). Perched above the shield a stylized eagle with wings displayed and inverted of the fourth. Attached below the shield, a red scroll inscribed GEORGE WASHINGTON H.S., in silver.


Symbolism

Scarlet and gray are the school colors. The eagle is the mascot of the school, signifying strength, honor, and unity. The eagle is a well-known national symbol, and further alludes to the Founding Fathers, or in this case, the first President of the United States, George Washington. The Golden Gate Bridge denotes the location of the school, overlooking the famous landmark from the city of San Francisco. The sun suggests excellence and brilliance.


Background

The shoulder loop insignia was authorized on 22 February 2018.

Description

On a shield shaped embroidered item edged with a 1/8 inches (.32 cm) red border, blazoned as follows: Gules, issuant from dexter, a stylized demi-eagle throughout, wings Argent (Silver Gray), head and beak Argent, eye and details Sable. Attached above the shield a gray scroll edged with a 1/8 inch (.32 cm) red border inscribed GEORGE WASHINGTON in red. Overall dimensions are 3 1/2 inches (8.89 cm) in height and 2 15/16 inches (7.46 cm) in width.

The shoulder sleeve insignia was originally authorized on 4 May 1982, it is currently being amended to update the manufacturing drawings and to add the ACU color conversions on 22 February 2018. (TIOH Drawing Number A-10J-1204)
