Shoulder Sleeve Insignia

Description

On a shield shaped embroidered item edged with a 1/8 inch (.32 cm) purple border, blazoned as follows: Celeste (Light Blue) a palm tree issuant from grass mound Proper. Attached above the item a purple arched scroll edged with a 1/8 inches  (.32 cm) purple border, inscribed MCALLEN in yellow. Overall dimensions are 3 7/8 inches  (9.84 cm) in height.


Symbolism

The colors of the shield represent McAllen High School. Light blue symbolizes youth and the palm tree represents strength of character.


Background

The shoulder Sleeve insignia was originally authorized on 15 April 1971, it is currently being amended to update the manufacturing drawings and to add the ACU color conversions on 25 January 2019. (TIOH Drawing Number A-10J-1247)

Blazon

On a gold metal and epoxied shield shaped device 1 1/4 inches (3.18 cm) in height blazoned as follows: Purpure, three palm trees, two and one Or, all within a bordure Sable, overall an orle bearing twenty-three spikes, points outward, of the second. Crest: Surmounted on top of the shield, from a torse Or the letter ‘M” of the last. Attached to each side of the shield and to base, a Purple scroll inscribed “IN UNITY OUR SPIRIT GROWS” in Gold letters.


Symbolism

Gold and Purple are the McAllen High School colors. The palm tree represents strength of character, adapted from the battalion’s shoulder sleeve insignia, authorized on 15 April 1971. The bulldog is the school’s mascot, illustrated by the gold spiked border. The combination of the images exemplifies the growth in unity which embodies the spirit of the Bulldog Battalion. The letter “M” signifies the name and location of the school in McAllen, Texas. The ‘U’-shaped scroll underscores the motto “IN UNITY OUR SPIRIT GROWS.”


Background

The shoulder loop insignia was approved on 24 June 2019.
