Shoulder Sleeve Insignia

Description

On a shield shaped embroidered item edged with a 1/8 inch (.32 cm) Yellow border, blazoned as follows: Or, in dexter chief a Zia sun Gules, surmounted by a stylized representation of a bucking bronco head to sinister Sable, garnished Gris (Smoke). Overall dimensions are 3 1/2 inches (8.89 cm) in height by 2 3/8 inches (6.03 cm) in width.


Symbolism

Red and black are the school colors for New Mexico Military Institute (NMMI). The Bronco is the institute’s mascot which embodies the spirit of NMMI—the spirit that enables past, present, and future cadets to participate with vigor, and to respect discipline and achieve with honor. The Zia sun is representative of the state of New Mexico.

Blazon

On a shield shaped silver metal and epoxied device 1 1/4 inches (3.18 cm) in height blazoned as follows: Sable, a stylized representation of a bucking bronco head to sinister Gules; attached to the sides and bottom of the shield is a red tri-parted scroll, with the inscription “DUTY, HONOR ACHIEVEMENT,” in silver letters; all surmounting a vertically placed sword, point downwards, with winged hilt, all Silver.


Symbolism

Red and black are the institute’s colors. The winged sword symbolizes the cadets’ resolve to uphold the principles enshrined in NMMI’s motto of “DUTY HONOR ACHIEVEMENT.” The institute’s mascot, the Bronco, embodies the spirit of NMMI—the spirit that enables past, present, and future cadets to participate with vigor, and to respect discipline and achieve
with honor.
