Symbolism

The university colors are white and red. The vertical division of the shield background, as well as the images, suggest Salt Lake City and the foothills of the majestic Wasatch Mountains. The winged arrowhead denotes the cadet’s readiness to rise to any challenge and to approach all decisions with pride and dignity. The stylized feathers allude to the Ute Warrior Battalion (UWB) headquartered at the University of Utah, which has been in existence since 1919. The feathers also signify the notable importance of the battalion to the university and the community since its establishment. The vertically divided star illustrates the noteworthy addition of Salt Lake Community College and Westminster College to the University of Utah program.

Background

The shoulder sleeve insignia was originally approved on 8 November 1932, it was cancelled on 4 August 2006, due to the sensitivities of Native American groups in the area who found the pervious design elements insensitive to their heritage.  A new design and description for the SSI has been authorized on 20 August 2021.
