The device is based on the seal of the University of Scranton. It combines symbols of Catholic saints the university follows. The cross and rising sun embodies Christ and the light of the church. The mullet was taken from the seal of the university’s predecessor, Saint Thomas College. The two wolves holding the caldron are symbols of Saint Ignatius Loyola and points to a Jesuit lineage. The two garbs of wheat were adapted from the coat of arms of Pennsylvania. The Latin motto translates to, “Religion, Morals, Culture.”
