Blazon

On a shield shaped embroidered item edged with a 1/8” black border blazoned as follows: Argent, a lightning bolt bendwise sinister Gules throughout surmounted by a keystone Purpure bearing a lion rampant to sinister Or, in chief dexter a long cross patonce of the last. 


Symbolism

Purple and white are the university’s colors.  The lion signifies strength and intelligence.  The cross symbolizes Christ and identifies the university as a Catholic institution.  The keystone points to the State of Pennsylvania.  The lightning bolt unifies the values of the church and military in the ROTC program.

Blazon

On a silver metal and epoxied shield shaped device 1-3/16 inches in height blazoned as follows: Purpure, on a fess Argent between in chief two wolves combattant grasping a cauldron suspended from a chain Or and a demi-sun rayonnant issuant from base of the like, a mullet between two garbs of wheat of the first; all within bordure Sable charged with eight plates.  Attached above the shield of the shield upon a torse Argent and Purpure a cross patonce Or.  Attached below the shield, a silver tri-parted scroll inscribed “RELIGIO” on the left “CULTURA” on the right and “MORES” at the bottom in black letters.


Symbolism

The device is based on the seal of the University of Scranton.  It combines symbols of Catholic saints the university follows.  The cross and rising sun embodies Christ and the light of the church.  The mullet was taken from the seal of the university’s predecessor, Saint Thomas College.  The two wolves holding the caldron are symbols of Saint Ignatius Loyola and points to a Jesuit lineage.  The two garbs of wheat were adapted from the coat of arms of Pennsylvania.  The Latin motto translates to, “Religion, Morals, Culture.”
