A gold color metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in height overall consisting of a blue shield with two wavy white bars below a gold representation of the California National Guard State Crest and an open book in chief, overall a torch superimposed by an escallop shell bearing the seal of the city of Long Beach all gold, and attached below the shield a tripartite gold scroll inscribed "LONG BEACH" on either end and "USD" at center in blue letters.
Blue and white are the school colors. The open book and torch represent the pursuit of knowledge, the state crest and city seal identify the school's location and the wavy bars symbolize water referring to the nearby Pacific Ocean.
The shoulder loop insignia originally approved 19 February 1965, was amended to revise description and to include symbolism, 23 July 1984.
