Shoulder Sleeve Insignia


Description/Blazon
On an embroidered shield shaped device 3 1/2 inches (8.89 cm) in height and 3 inches (7.62 cm) in width blazoned: Gules, a bar bendwise sinister Argent (Silver Gray) surmounted by a Ram in trian aspect of the last detailed Sable and edged with a 1/8 inch (.32 cm) Black border. Attached above the shield, a rectangle of the first bearing the inscription "S. GARRETT" in White letters and edged with a 1/8 inch (.32 cm) Black border.

Symbolism
Red and white are the school's colors. The school's mascot is the Ram and represents strength, endurance, and intelligence.

Description/Blazon
A Gold color metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in width overall consisting of a shield blazoned: Argent, the head of a ram guardant Or; a chief per pale on the dexter Gules a chevron of the field between in base waves of the sea of the third and on the sinister of the last a cross bottony per cross quarterly of the like and of the first. Attached below the shield, a Red scroll inscribed "SOUTHERN GARRETT HIGH SCHOOL" in base metal letters.

Symbolism
Red and white are the school's colors. The Ram is the school's mascot and represents strength, endurance and intelligence. The chevron symbolizes the Appalachian Mountains that run through Maryland and refer to scholarly achievement. The waves allude to the Potomac and Youghiogheny Rivers. The Maryland flag contains the family crest of the Calvert and Crossland families. Maryland was founded as an English Colony in 1634 by Cecil Calvert, the second Lord Baltimore. The black and gold design on the flag is the coat of arms of the Calvert family. The red and white cross bottony, taken from the Maryland flag design, belongs to the Crossland family, the family of Calvert's mother. The Maryland State flag is the only flag in the United States to be base on British Heraldry.
